	Arbuthnot Genealogical overview

The Arbuthnot(t) family originated in Arbuthnott, Kincardineshire, Scotland where the Chief of the family, the Viscount of Arbuthnott, still lives. We imagine that all Arbuthnotts come from that area or are descended from people who did so, excepting of course those who chose to take the name.

We do not distinguish between those who spell their surname with one "t" as opposed to two. Historically it makes no difference and in one document the name was spelled "Arbuthnot", "Arbuthnott" and Arbuthnoth". At the moment, it is generally accurate to say that most of the two "t"s are found in Scotland, while the one "t"s who are about nine times as numerous, live elsewhere.

listed below; if you cannot find your branch, email us. We resist the urge to link tables
where we simply don't know of any precise connection between them other than the name.

1	1	The descendants of Samuel Arbuthnot who is believed to have come from Northern Ireland, and was in the US before 1796, when he married Esther McMarland as his second wife. He is said to have come to the US with two brothers whose identity is unknown. Samuel and Esther settled in western Pennsylvania and had 12 children, most of whom moved west. Members of this large branch are now located throughout the US. The connection with Scotland has not yet been established.												USA

2	2	This family, from County Down, Northern Ireland, are thought to be descendants of John Arbuthnot of Balleny (ca. 1670-1742) and his wife, Jean Dunbar. Charles Arbuthnot, his great-great-grandson, came to New York in 1839, settled in Pittsburgh around 1840, and married Elizabeth Shaw. Isabella Arbuthnot, his great-great- granddaughter, married John Hanna and came to the US, settling in western Pennsylvania. Eleanor Arbuthnot, another great-great-granddaughter, married her first cousin, Charles, who died in County Down before the family came to the US. Mary Ann Arbuthnot, Charles and Eleanor's daughter, the first of their children to come to the US, settled in western Pennsylvania in 1850 and married James Watt. James Mackey Arbuthnot and his sister Margaret came to western Pennsylvania next, in 1851. James married Rebecca Criswell and Margaret married Robert Pinkerton. Eleanor and six other children came to Pennsylvania before 1855. Many descendants of James and those of his sister Jane Ellen and her husband, James Warren, have remained in Pennsylvania. William Arbuthnot, thought to be another great-great-grandson of John Arbuthnot and Jean Dunbar, married Elizabeth Steel in Ireland and came to the US in the mid-19th century with several children, settling mostly in New Jersey. Rachel Arbuthnot, Eleanor's younger sister, another great-great-granddaughter of John Arbuthnot and Jean Dunbar, had come to the US with her husband, John Boyle around 1830 and settled in western Pennsylvania. At least three of the children of Eleanor's younger brother, Samuel, came to the US: Mary Eleanor Arbuthnot came to Philadelphia and married Robert Cook,Sr.; Charles Dobbin Arbuthnot married Margaret Boyles and settled in West Virginia; Samuel Edward Arbuthnot, Sr. married and settled in Maryland. Other descendants of John Arbuthnot and Jean Dunbar also immigrated to the US in the late 19th century. Descendants of these immigrants are now located throughout the US. The connection between this Table and Scotland has not yet been determined.												USA
3	3	The descendants of James Sawyer (or Burton) Arbuthnot. It has not been proven when or from where he came to the US. It is thought he may have been a son of John Arbuthnot and Dorothea Jones Donald of Table 58; another theory is that he was one of the brothers of Samuel, Table 1. He was in Mississippi in the late 1700s, married Catherine White and settled in Louisiana. Most members of this family live in the south, although some have settled in other parts of the country.												USA & Canada
4	2	The descendants of George Arbuthnot and Jean, n�e Mavor. One of his grandsons was George Arbuthnot who, with his wife, Margaret Wilson, came to the US from Elgin, Scotland and settled in Wisconsin in 1864. Most of their descendants remained in Wisconsin, while others moved to other parts of the US. Some of the family remain in Scotland.												USA & Scotland
5	2	James Arbuthnot married Mary White and settled in Pennsylvania and Ohio in the late 18th century. It has not been determined when or from where he came to the US. Their descendants are located throughout the US.												USA
6	4	Descendants of Robert Arbuthnot and Elizabeth, n�e Nevin. They came to Canada in 1834 from County Antrim, Northern Ireland and settled in Ontario. Descendants of their two children, Esther and Robert, and 16 grandchildren are located throughout Canada and the United States. The connection with Scotland has not yet been established. 7	4	Descendants of Moses Arbuthnott and Susanna, n�e Jack. William Arbuthnott and his wife Margaret Wilson came to Canada from Scotland in 1913 with their 7 oldest children and settled in Manitoba. James Arbuthnott, William's brother, also came to Canada in 1913, married Henrietta Russell, and settled in Alberta. Frederick Adam Arbuthnott, a nephew, came to Canada from Scotland in 1922 and married Agnes How. 8	4	This family includes descendants of Robert Arbuthnot and Mary Bell of County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. Some family members remained in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, while others settled in England, Wales and Australia. Samuel Arbuthnot, a great-grandson, married Martha Paul and lived in British Columbia. Many descendants of this family live in Alberta. Arbuthnot and Sarah Dunbar James Arbuthnot of Co.Down, whose mother's name was Sarah Dunbar and whose father's name may have been Thomas, went to Queensland after his marriage to Rose Johnson in 1853. They had five sons, Thomas, James, Robert, William and John, also three daughters, Margaret, Sarah, and Rose. Six generations of their descendants have lived in Queensland. Joseph Arbuthnott, III, nine generations later, married Jean Gray and settled in Ontario in the early 1900s. He was a cotton broker in New Orleans during the Civil War and died around 1865. Lucy and her son George Washington Arbuthnot lived in Iowa. John Arbuthnot came from County Tyrone, Northern Ireland to Ontario, Canada in the 1850s with his first wife, whose name is unknown. William, their son, remained in Ireland, but some of his grandchildren came to the US and settled in Illinois. John married Mary Connors and had 5 more children. His son John, moved to Manitoba, Samuel remained in Ontario, and Robert moved to British Columbia, from where some of his sons came to the US. Samuel Arbuthnot, John's brother, also immigrated to Ontario, Canada around 1860 and married Mary Laidlaw. Most of their descendants stayed in Ontario, while some immigrated to the US.
