Mr. Ira Arburthnot Merritt, age 82, of Route 1, Douglas, Georgia died Monday, January 27, 1992, at Coffee Regional Hospital following an extended illness. Mr. Merritt was born in Coffee County, July 22, 1909, the son of Allen and Fannie Ricketson Arburthnot.
He was a lifelong resident and retired farmer of Coffee County. His church membership was at Chatterton Grove Holiness Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Agnes Arburthnot Merritt of Douglas, Ga.; 3 sons, Pete Arburthnot of Sharpsburg, Ga., George Arburthnot of Winnsboro, Texas and Jack Merritt of Douglas; 1 daughter, Frances Penland Bragg of Ocala, Fla.; 4 stepsons, Vickers Kirkland of Hazelhurst, Ga., Jackie Carter of Avon Park, Fla., Billy Carter of Nicholls, Ga., and Ray Carter of Lake Wales, Fla.; 4 step-daughters, Annie Rowell, Lola Parker, Glenda Radford of Okeechobee, Fla., and Mary Arnett of Albany, Ga.; 1 sister, Vicey Penland Minix of Waycross, Ga.; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, January 29, 1992, at the Chapel of Sims Funeral Home of Douglas with Rev. Harold Barnes and Rev. Herman Soles officiating. Special music was provided by the Cady Sisters as they sang "I Want Us To Be Together In Heaven" and "I'll Be Waiting at the River For You", accompanied by Bonnie Musgrove, organist. Interment followed in the Salem Church Cemetery.
Serving as active pallbearers were Terry Tatum, Ashley Johnson, Jerry Kirkland, David Kirkland, Tommy Kirkland, and Wayne Kirkland. Honorary pallbearers included: Cecil Harper, J. D. Chaney, Clyde Rollins, John Long, Clyde Kirkland, and Paul Hutcheson. Sims Funeral Home of Douglas was in charge of the arrangements.
