2 | 2 | This family, from County Down, Northern Ireland, are thought to be descendants of John Arbuthnot of Balleny (ca. 1670-1742) and his wife, Jean Dunbar. Charles Arbuthnot, his great-great-grandson, came to New York in 1839, settled in Pittsburgh around 1840, and married Elizabeth Shaw. Isabella Arbuthnot, his great-great- granddaughter, married John Hanna and came to the US, settling in western Pennsylvania. Eleanor Arbuthnot, another great-great-granddaughter, married her first cousin, Charles, who died in County Down before the family came to the US. Mary Ann Arbuthnot, Charles and Eleanor's daughter, the first of their children to come to the US, settled in western Pennsylvania in 1850 and married James Watt. James Mackey Arbuthnot and his sister Margaret came to western Pennsylvania next, in 1851. James married Rebecca Criswell and Margaret married Robert Pinkerton. Eleanor and six other children came to Pennsylvania before 1855. Many descendants of James and those of his sister Jane Ellen and her husband, James Warren, have remained in Pennsylvania. William Arbuthnot, thought to be another great-great-grandson of John Arbuthnot and Jean Dunbar, married Elizabeth Steel in Ireland and came to the US in the mid-19th century with several children, settling mostly in New Jersey. Rachel Arbuthnot, Eleanor's younger sister, another great-great-granddaughter of John Arbuthnot and Jean Dunbar, had come to the US with her husband, John Boyle around 1830 and settled in western Pennsylvania. At least three of the children of Eleanor's younger brother, Samuel, came to the US: Mary Eleanor Arbuthnot came to Philadelphia and married Robert Cook,Sr.; Charles Dobbin Arbuthnot married Margaret Boyles and settled in West Virginia; Samuel Edward Arbuthnot, Sr. married and settled in Maryland. Other descendants of John Arbuthnot and Jean Dunbar also immigrated to the US in the late 19th century. Descendants of these immigrants are now located throughout the US. The connection between this Table and Scotland has not yet been determined. | USA & Ireland |

Some family members remained in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, while others settled in England, Wales and Australia. Samuel Arbuthnot, a great-grandson, married Martha Paul and lived in British Columbia. Many descendants of this family live in Alberta. John Arbuthnot came from County Tyrone, Northern Ireland to Ontario, Canada in the 1850s with his first wife, whose name is unknown. William, their son, remained in Ireland, but some of his grandchildren came to the US and settled in Illinois. John married Mary Connors and had 5 more children. His son John, moved to Manitoba, Samuel remained in Ontario, and Robert moved to British Columbia, from where some of his sons came to the US. Samuel Arbuthnot, John's brother, also immigrated to Ontario, Canada around 1860 and married Mary Laidlaw. Most of their descendants stayed in Ontario, while some immigrated to the US.
