Peterhead Old Kirkyard Lair Records

In 1710 Baron Bailie Thomas Arbuthnot of Peterhead, who was gifted with an enterprising disposition, initiated the manufacture of kelp on a commercial scale.

The foundation stone of Peterhead Public Library and Arbuthnot Museum was laid by Mrs. Carnegie, on a site on the corner of St.Peter Street and Queen Street, on 8th August 1891. Andrew Carnegie, the Scottish-American industrialist, gave over £1,500 to the building fund. The building cost £5,000 and was opened to the public on 12th October 1893. (Buchan, Jim Postcard).

We, the undersigned Electors of the Burgh of Peterhead, request that you, Messrs George Gilbert Anderson, Shipowner; Francis Robertson, Shipbuilder; James Stewart, Tanner; and Andrew Cruden, Corn Merchant, all in Peterhead, will allow yourselves to be brought forward as Candidates to the Town Council, at the approaching Nomination Meeting:-
Arbuthnot Thomas, of Nether Kinmundy.
Arbuthnot James, of Invernettie.
Arbuthnot Thomas, Jun., Bath House.

Follows are list of the whole Inhabitants of Peterhead who are obleiged to carry armour, who is under the rexive command of the Captains underwritten, conform to the four Divisions speed., viz.

List of the whole ffenceable Inhabitants are one hundred and forty-eight.
