The partnership was formed in 1833 by John Alves Arbuthnot and Alfred Latham (partner 1833-66). The only other Latham to be involved was George Latham (partner 1866-71). The partnership became a limited company in 1921. In 1969 a holding company was formed called Arbuthnot Latham Holdings Ltd and certain directors including Andrew R  C Arbuthnot became directors of that company. The business was acquired by Dow Scandia Banking Corporation Ltd in 1982.
