THE DESCENDANTS OF JAMES ARBUTHNOT of Dens (The South African branch).

James Arbuthnot of Dens. Baptized Peterhead 13 August 1741. Died aged 82 19 March 1823. For details of his ancestry see E.5. on Table J. He was a prosperous merchant of Peterhead who purchased Arbuthnot House, Peterhead during 1768 from Robert Arbuthnot of Haddo-Rattray; during 1786 he bought the Haddo-Rattray estate from Alexander Farquharson, an accountant of Edinburgh. Married, 21 February 1775, Catherine Cumine (born 22 February 1752; died 6 November 1787), daughter of George Cumine of Pitully Castle (now a ruin), near Fraserburgh and sister of Barbara Cumine who married Alexander Annand of Haddo-Rattray.

George Arbuthnot of Invernettie, Aberdeenshire and Arbuthnot House, Peterhead. Born 1777. Baptized Peterhead 17 July 1777. Died 4 June 1847. A cotton manufacturer in Glasgow, a merchant and the first Provost of Peterhead. He may be the George Arbuthnot shown on Table 83 as having had an illegitimate child by Helen Davidson. Married in Peterhead, 5 June 1816, Mary Hutchison (born 13 April 1796, died 14 February 1837), daughter of John Hutchison of Cairngall.

He farmed for a while with his second cousin Fitzjames Arbuthnot at Rydal Mount, Equeefa, Natal. It is presumed that this is the George Arbuthnot who had three children with Marie Makabutaba.

3. James Arbuthnot of Umzinto Lodge, Kelso District, Alexandra County, Natal. Born Peterhead 1816. Died Umzinto Lodge 4 May 1861. Married in Scotland, 1842, Jane ("Jean") Cordiner (born Peterhead 1819, died Arborville, Equeefa, Natal 2 July 1907, buried Equeefa), daughter of Dr MacDuff Cordiner of Madras and Elizabeth, née Arbuthnot, daughter of Thomas Arbuthnot of Innervidie (for details of whom, see A.3.a.aa.AA. on Table Q). Her Zulu name was "mother elephant". They emigrated on the "Unicorn" in 1856 under the Byrne's Scheme. In recognition of their pioneering role in Natal, two of the main streets in Scottburgh are named Arbuthnot Street and Cordiner Street.
