Lord Lieutenant of Kincardineshire; Representative Peer for Scotland, 1818-47; Lord Rector of Aberdeen University. David George Arbuthnot said he held a cornet's commission in the 1st Regiment of the Dragoon Guards and was later a Captain in the 52nd Regiment. The first member of this family consistently to spell his name with two 'T's at the end. He fell from a horse in 1829, suffered a badly fractured skull and became of unsound mind. In 1848, he was accused of "fraud, forgery and uttering", but his relations made good debts which the Viscount had made in their names; he left Scotland and two years later handed over all his responsibilities to his son.
