ROBERT ARBUTHNOT, 12th of Arbuthnot. For details of his ancestry see BB.i.I. 4.bb.(1)(C) on Table A. Died 1505 per "Memories" or 11 January 1506 [1] or 3 November 1506 per The "Missal" which also says he was "a man of sound judgment; a wise man". By his direction the "Arbuthnott Missal" was written and completed in 1491. Married, first, MARGARET WISHART, daughter of Sir James Wishart of Pitarrow.
A. AMBROSE ARBUTHNOT. Fl 1483. Died young when at school in Brechin, 22 July 1491.
Robert married second, contract dated 10 September 1475, MARIOTA or MARION SCRYMGEOUR (died 8 January 1518), daughter of Sir James Scrymgeour of Dudhope, Constable of Dundee. One of Robert's daughters married before 25 September 1490, contract dated 23 January 1490, DAVID RAIT of Drumnager.
B. JAMES ARBUTHNOT, 13th of Arbuthnot. Died 8 March 1521. The "Missal" says he was "an honourable man". He married, contract dated 31 August 1507, Lady JEAN STEWART (died 19 April 1522), fourth daughter of John Stewart, 2nd Earl of Atholl. The "Missal" says she was "a worthy lady".
AA. ROBERT ARBUTHNOT, 14th of Arbuthnot. Born Arbuthnott c.1508. Died Stonehaven 15 October 1579. He had an illegitimate child:

Robert married first, contract dated 2 March 1526, KATHERINE ERSKINE, daughter of JOHN ERSKINE of Dun. She dsp at Arbuthnott 15 June 1529 according to "Memories" and 29 May 1529 according to the "Missal". He married, second, CHRISTIAN KEITH (born Keith, E Lothian 1512; died before 12 July 1553), eldest daughter of Robert, Lord Keith (born Dunnottar, Kincardine ca. 1483; died after 5 April 1514) (and his wife (md Morton, Dumfriesshire, Scotland 1505), Elizabeth, née Douglas) and sister of Sir William Keith. Robert Lord Keith (said to have been killed at the Battle of Flodden, 1513, but still alive on 5 April 1514 per Sir James Balfour Paul's "Scots Peerage") was the son of William Keith, 3rd Earl Marischal and the brother of Alexander Keith of Pittendrum, the first husband of Marion Lundie whose second husband was Mr Robert Arbuthnot, the uncle of Robert, 14th of Arbuthnot.   Elizabeth Douglas (born Morton; died after 5 May 1527) was the daughter of John Douglas, 2nd Earl of Morton (born Morton ca.1459; died ca.1512) and Janet, née Chrichton (born Scotland 1461; md Scotland before 22 June 1493), whose mother (the wife of James Douglas, 1st Earl of Morton) was Joanna Stewart, the deaf and dumb daughter of King James I of Scotland and Queen Joan Beaufort.

2. Robert Arbuthnot, Senior of Caterline. Married at Arbuthnott, 2 April 1642 (contract dated 19 April 1642), Margaret Arbuthnot (see E.AA.a.bb.1 below) as her first husband.
(A) Robert Arbuthnot, Junior. Served heir to his father 1666. Sold Caterline to his cousin, Simon Arbuthnot (E.1.g. on Table C), in 1669. He is mentioned in his mother's will in 1690 as "at the kirk of Fordoun" ["Memories"].A Robert Arbuthnot, Junior, son of Robert Arbuthnot, Senior of Craighall, is shown in "Fasti Ecclesiae Scoticanae" under the heading "Presbytery of Fordoun", sub-heading "Arbuthnott" as having married (contract dated 6 May 1605) Helen Barclay, daughter of George Barclay of Syde; Mrs P.S.-M. Arbuthnot referred to this work and argues the following, which is included at this point as being as likely as any other, in greater detail ("Memories" page 444). She says that Admiral Marriott Arbuthnot believed his grandfather to have been Rev Robert Arbuthnot, minister of Chrichton and Cranston (and that Robert at the kirk of Fordoun cannot be proved to have been afterwards minister at Chrichton) who married Margaret Kennedy (died March 1707), heiress in her issue to the Kennedys of Baltersan.
(1) HUGH ARBUTHNOT. Served heir to his uncle, HUGH KENNEDY of Baltersan 1722. Mariner. In 1716 he was appointed agent to sell Buckhill, Chester Row, Kent for John and George Sparks.
(2) ROBERT ARBUTHNOT, III. Baptized before 1682. Married at Wyke Regis Church, Dorset, 30 November 1704, SARAH BURY of Weymouth, heiress of Melcombe Regis.
Somewhere hereabouts fits in William Comber (born 19 July 1725, died 24 March 1810, son of Dr Thomas Comber Dean of Durham & Anne Wilson), Vicar of Kirbymoorside, N Yorks c.1750, Lord of the Manor of Apleford, who married in Oswaldkirk, Yorks 22 September 1756 Dorothy Arbuthnot of Weybridge (born England c.1729, died aged c.50), daughter of James Arbuthnot (d before 1746) and Dorothy Hassell (d Kirkby Moorside 1760, dau of Thomas & Jane Hassell).

aa. ELIZABETH WARRENDER. Born 1555. Married, betw 1575-76, James Finley (born 15 September 1530).  Their descendants emigrated to Dublin, Ireland and, 22 May 1720, to America, landing in Newcastle, Delaware, and settling in Pennsylvania. They had numerous descendants.
Christian married second, on or before 24 November 1556, GEORGE SYMMER, Junior (born c.1534; died c.1583), eldest son of George Symmer, Sr of Balzeordie and had issue including:
bb. George Symmer Sr. Born c.1558. He had a son George, Jr (1582-before 1617) who had a son George III (c.1609-?) who had a son Robert (?-1696) who had a son George (?-1715) who was the 11th of Balzeordie. This last George had a daughter Madalene who, after the death of her brother, Colin, became the ultimate heiress of Balzeordie, Forfarshire, which she took to her husband David Doig of Cookstoun & Unthank, Angus (his mother was Christian Mudie). David Doig and Magdalene Symmer had an eldest daughter Christian who married Sir James Carnegie, 3rd Bart. (whose great-grandson inherited the Earldom of Southesk when the elder line ceased) and took the estates of Balzeordie and Cookston into that family. Sir James Carnegie, 3rd Bt, was grandson of Margaret, daughter of 2nd Viscount Arbuthnot.

Principal of King's College, Aberdeen. Compiled, c.1567, a Latin "History of the Arbuthnot Family" entitled "Originis et Incrementi Familiae Arbuthnoticae Descriptio Historica". Minister of Logie Buchan (1568), of Forve and Arbuthnott (1569) and of St Andrews (1583). Moderator of the General Assembly (1573 and 1577). He matriculated his arms.
DD. KATHERINE ARBUTHNOT. Married ALEXANDER ARBUTHNOT whose genealogy is unknown. They had issue.
F. ELIZABETH ARBUTHNOT. According to "Memories" she married, first, THOMAS FOTHERINGHAM of Powrie and, second, Mr MARTIN of Cardowne, Fife. The "Missal" distinguishes between the Elizabeth who was the daughter of Robert Arbuthnot and the Elizabeth who married these two gentlemen and says that the former died 4 February 1510 while the latter died 25 June 1528.

L. ISABEL ARBUTHNOT. Died unmarried before 15 January 1535.
Robert also had an illegitimate son:
N. Dr PATRICK ARBUTHNOT. Died 3 September 1540. Letters of legitimation granted February 1530-31. Rector of Menmuir and Newlands and Canon of Dunkeld (per "The Missal"). Physician in ordinary to King James V of Scotland, and a distinguished Doctor of Medicine.
