A. JOHN ARBUTHNOT. Notary public at Rora in 1598, factor to the Earl Marischal. He was armigerous. Col Jock Noble believed he married a Miss Stevenson of Inchsmill, Inverugie (source unknown).    
  1. ROBERT ARBUTHNOT, Senior of Scotsmill, on the banks of the river Ugie, near Inverugie, two miles west of Peterhead. Born 1610. Died 1682. Buried St Fergus. Also factor to the Earl Marischal. Married BEATRIX GORDON (born 1606; died 1682, buried St Fergus), daughter of JOHN GORDON of Chapeltown & of Sheills by MARGARET, née ARBUTHNOT (see B.3.a. on Table N).    
    a. Rev ALEXANDER ARBUTHNOT, Senior. Born c.1638. Died 27 February 1691. Buried at Arbuthnott 23 October 1691. Educated Marischal College, Aberdeen (MA, 1654); Alexander was Minister of Hollywood in 1663; On 19 September 1689 Alexander, refused to sigh an oath to the rulers William and Mary who had been victorious over the Jacobites, and he was dismissed from his parish deprived by the Privy Council for general non-compliance with Presbyterianism. . He did not go quietly, however, for he took the session book with him. After he died his sons were required to return the session book which John Arbuthnot did in order that his father might be buried. However John's request to erect a headstone at his father's grave was only granted with strict conditions as what might be inscribed on the stone and in the circumstances no stone was put up. He retired to the castle of Halgreen at the mouth of the Bervie, purchased the estate of Kinghornie and continued Principal Arbuthnot's "History of the Arbuthnot Family". Married first at Arbuthnott, 4 April 1666, MARGARET LAMMIE, daughter of John Lammie, Dean of Brechin and minister of Farnell.    
      AA. JOHN ARBUTHNOT. Baptized Kincardineshire 29 April 1667. Died Hampstead 27 February 1734/5. Buried St James's, Piccadilly. Will proved 12 March 1735. MD (St Andrews 1696). Physician-in-ordinary to Queen Anne and had considerable influence at Court. "What time is it, Dr Arbuthnot? "Whatever it please, your Majesty."  In 1714, formed with Swift, Pope, Parnell and Gay a brilliant group called "the Scriblerus Club" in the literary revival of that period. Also a friend of Bolingbroke. Known (from his "History of John Bull") as inventor of the character of "John Bull" as typifying the English. He and Pope wrote the text of Handel's opera "Esther" (1718). Suffered from asthma. Guardian to Peter the wild boy on his first arrival in London. Married 1702 MARGARET, whose maiden name was probably WEMYSS (died 3 May 1730).   JA

      BB. Sir ROBERT ARBUTHNOT, Bt. Baptized 3 June 1669. Died 1741.  Graduate of Marischal College, joined Bonnie Dundee's army and fought against General Hugh Mackay at the Battle of Killiecrankie. Dundee's forces were completely victorious, but he was killed. In August the Scottish resistance was crushed at the Battle of Dunkeld and Robert Arbuthnot fled to France. Banker at Rouen, France. A noted Jacobite. Celebrated for his generosity and philanthropy (see Pope's Letters vol iii, p.72 ed. Bowles). Married first a Huguenot who was living in 1717.
