Captain George Duff
Born 1764
Died in command of H M S Mars 21st October 1805
Extract from letter of condolence from Captain Duff's former tutor.
The letter, presumably, was written during the closing months of 1805.
I have every cause to lament the loss, our country at large,
and yourself in particular, have sustained in the valiant and amiable Captain Duff: I had
the honour to know him in his earliest days, and ever found his mind possessed of the
finest dispositions, and always pointing to that element on which he so gloriously fell. I
rejoice to find his country is so sensible of his merit that a monument is voted for him,
with others, at the public charge. |
